Marie Antoinette and her La Belle Poule Wig Cages.
Extraordinary, extravagant wigs are always associated with Marie Antoinette, the glittering royal wife of Louis XVI. For centuries she has been an icon for boldness in style and fashion, which prevailed in the aristocracy in France until the French Revolution at the end of the eighteenth century. The man who was responsible for the queen`s fabulous hairstyles was Léonard-Alexis Autier, also known as Monsieur Léonard. He was the favorite coiffeur of Marie Antoinette.
Monsieur Léonard used wire frames, hairpins and artificial hair to add volume and height to the wigs. One of his incredible creations was a wig with a ship that sailed on a sea of wavy hair. The model replicated La Belle Poule, a French frigate, victorious in many naval battles. The ship itself, with its masts, rigging and weapons, was built as a miniature on a small pillow on her head.
Many such hairstyles were then mounted on a wired cage and were very heavy. Today it is easier to implement this wig style! With our lightweight wig cage, available in 7 different shape, you can create historical hairstyles - or let your imagination run wild. The cage is made of Rigilene boning, covered with square lace. Available in dark brown, light brown, blond and white or let us create custom-made wig cages for you.
